Andimta-Ethiopian Civil Discourse Association (Andimta)

Is a non-governmental and non for profit civil discourse association that was established in 2018 (and legally registered in December 2020) by Ethiopians who are deeply committed to promote a culture of civility and non-violent political discourse among Ethiopians.

Andimta is born in the wake of the peaceful transfer of power from H.E Prime Minister (PM) Haile Mariam Desalegn to H.E. PM Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) in May 2018. As the power transition was preceded by massive, sustained, and deadly riots across the nation, promises by the new PM to implement sweeping political reforms had raised tremendous hopes among many people.

Meeting

Although many welcomed the change, divergent viewpoints soon surfaced regarding what needs to change and how, which created not only a politically tense and polarized environment but also erosion of civility when advocating for changes.

On top of the weak democratic culture, the situation was also exacerbated due to an increase in harmful contents disseminated by irresponsible media outlets and certain online activists over the social media sphere, which aggravated the polarization of political views.

Therefore, concerned citizens who realized the dangers of the continued erosion of a civilized political culture came together to chart a path of harmonious dialogues and peaceful coexistence.
